Standing Room Only for Angela Lansbury

“From the time I was about twelve, I never stopped acting. Acting is my business.”

“If you’re going to play a character other than yourself, it’s better that you bring that character to the first rehearsal…You have to leave yourself at home…
When I’m immersed in a scene, I leave Angela at home.”

“I’d like to stick around long enough to see my grandchildren grow up.”

November 14, Charlotte Moore, co-founder of the of the acclaimed Irish Repertory Theatre interviewed Angela Lansbury for the League of Professional Theatre Women’s Oral History Project.

Angela Lansbury’s career in entertainment is eighty plus years and going strong. In 1944, she launched her career in Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman. Thirteen years later she made her Broadway debut with Bert Lahr in Hotel Paradiso.  For over five decades, Ms. Lansbury was married to the late film executive Peter Shaw, whom she describes as “the most wonderful husband” and “the most handsome man.” She has been the recipient of  an Honorary Academy Award for her lifetime achievements in the industry, and  in April 2014, Lansbury was named Dame of the British Empire  by Queen Elizabeth.

The League of Professional Theatre Women’s Oral History programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the NYS Council on the Arts, a state agency, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. The Oral History Project also enjoys continued support from the Edith Meiser Foundation.
